Looking for a simple way to bring Francophone culture into your classroom this Mardi Gras?

Our interns from Île de la Réunion, Julia and Curtis, created a short video for your students that explores the history of Carnaval on the island and shows your students how to make delicious banana fritters (beignets de banane). It’s a fun, personal glimpse into daily life in this unique part of the French-speaking world.

This resource works well for:

  • Cultural discovery of the Francophone world
  • Listening comprehension
  • Food + traditions vocabulary
  • Short discussion or reflection activities

Ideas for extension:

  • Compare Mardi Gras traditions in different countries
  • Have students write a short paragraph about how they celebrate holidays at home
  • Try making banana fritters as a class or at home assignment

Explore the Francophone world with your students

Have you ever considered taking your students to explore the Francophone world in person?

We’re currently preparing student trips to France, Belgium, Morocco, Senegal, and Canada for 2027 — all fully customized to your goals and curriculum.
